As the jurisdiction of the university extends to the whole country, it has a plan to open centres in
tribal dominated states for which proposals are under way according to the Act of the University.
Acting accordingly, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor opened the first regional campus of University at Manipur on 09.09.2009.
It is worth mentioning here that the Hon'ble Prime Minister had included the opening of the campus of Indira Gandhi National
Tribal University into his first Hundred Days express programmes. All the formalities of the opening of the centre were
completed in one month. The Vice-Chancellor visited Imphal on 5th august 2009 regarding the study of the possibilities of
the opening of the Centre and the inspection of the site. The Manipur State Government proposed a plot of 300 acres in Makhan
village at the distance of 25 km from Imphal on Imphal-Dimapur National Highway No 39. He visited Imphal for the second time on
5th September 2009. In the meantime the State Government had completed all the formalities of the allotment of the land and on
9th September 2009 the Centre was formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Manipur. On the request of the Vice-Chancellor
the State Government has provided the services of the Principal of United College, Chandel,
The Centre has started M.Phil course in Political Science for the 2009-10. With the declaration of the commencement of the teaching at the Centre 46 students applied for the course out of which 20 students got admission. The University is going to impart Post Graduate courses Political Science and Human Right, Sociology and Social Anthropology, Social Work, Tribal Studies and Physical Education at its Manipur Regional Campus
